The news correspondent and photography collector donated approximately 2,700 photographs to Hobart and William Smith, showcasing pivotal moments from the 20th century. The exhibition, titled "Frames of History", features iconic figures like Angela Davis and President John F. Kennedy, providing insights into the processes of photographers, editors and journalists. Join GMF resident artists, including Associate Professor of Music Mark Olivieri, for music that moves from morning to night. We begin with a musical evocation of daybreak; Joseph Haydn’s Quartet in B Flat Op. 76, No. 4 (“Sunrise”) opens with a gentle melody rising out of a surrounding harmonic halo, before revealing its full brilliance. The Piano Sonata No. 2 in G-sharp minor by Alexander Scriabin moves through both moods and modes to juxtapose light and dark, while contemporary composers offer their own interpretations of such contrasts. We close, of course, as darkness falls with Arnold Schoenberg’s evocative Verklärte Nacht (“Transfigured Night”), which captures the moonlit scene depicted by Richard Dehmal’s eponymous poem. Purchase tickets at genevamusicfestival.com
Includes lunch and prizes. Separate registration required.
